  1. Yup, I’m extremely finicky. No question about that.
One of the things that I suspect drives my odds way down is that a known quirk of mine is being attracted only to very tall men. The shortest man I ever dated was 6’1″; all the others have been 6’4″ or taller. Of course, I’m equally picky on intelligence and some of the other characteristics.
Fortunately, my network is structured in such a way as to bring me into contract with the kinds of men I prefer, even if many of them aren’t as tall as I might have liked. But I’m also off the market, so it’s no longer an issue.

  2. Yeah. One has to assume that those are the odds if one is just walking around bumping into people at random. But we all select for people who are more likely to meet the criteria, simply in the way we interact, and form social groups.
On the other hand, I like this lyric from Up Against The Wall, by The Whitlams:
“She was one in a million
So there’s five more just in New South Wales ”

  3. On consideration, I think I should add that many of the things I’ve learned about job networking also apply to networking to find an SO (and vice versa).
The odds they give you are like the odds of finding a job in the newspaper classifieds. I’ve done that, but I am a lucky person and always have been. There are better ways to job-search and SO-search, and networking is one of the best.

  4. Not to mention, look at all the people who responded in thinking they had already come across their “soulmate,” or at least the person they wish to spend the rest of their (conscious) days with… instead of thinking of us as special, consider that you’re just part of the group who’s a little slower at it. [smile]
Heck, I’m completely unfair. I’ve got the woman and man of my dreams. [grinning]
